Leaving home
Going away to university is always a tricky time, both for the students who are leaving home and their parents who are staying behind. We got advice on how to cope from a student daughter and her dad.

A daughter’s advice to parents, by Kerry Price
My parents drove me to uni at the beginning of the first term. That was great, but then they hung around, so it was hard to chat to the people in the rooms near mine. It’s best if you leave us to unpack ourselves.

Don’t ask us to come home during term time. There’s a lot going on at weekends, there just isn’t time.

Get another interest or a pet if you feel lonely without us. Don’t make us feel guilty about leaving home!

It is quite interesting to hear about your experiences at uni, but remember that it was a LONG time ago so don’t go on about it so much. Things have changed a lot. Now we have a lot more debt and it’ll be harder to find a job in the future.

Please don’t check up on us or our friends on Facebook. I know it’s a public site, but we have the right to some privacy.

Don’t change anything in our bedrooms. We have only half left home – we’ll be back in the holidays, so please don’t touch anything.

We’d still like to come on family holidays with you. Don’t forget to include us just because we’re not there all the time.

A father’s advice to students, by Stuart Price
Don’t complain so much about how much work you have to do. We work a lot too. You’re an adult now, get used to it.

Put up with the fact that we refused to get a dog while you were at home, then suddenly bought one as soon as you moved out. We miss you!

Just because you’re at university studying very complex subjects, it doesn’t mean that you’re more intelligent than everybody else. Don’t treat your family as if they were stupid; we’re really not.

Let us come and visit you now and again. We promise to try not to embarrass you in front of your friends. We just want to see you for a short time and take you out for a meal.

Don’t waste so much time on Facebook. You need time for all that work you have to do, remember?

We might make a few changes to your room, so deal with it. It’s great to have a guest room at last, but we won’t change things too much, promise.

Don’t forget to call home from time to time and don’t get annoyed if we phone you. It’s not pestering. If we didn’t call, you wouldn’t know that we care.

In 1886, John Pomberton, a physician and pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia, prepared a mixture of the South American coca leaf extract and the tonic African kola nut, which had a pleasant taste. He believed that this syrup could help people suffering from fatigue, stress and toothache.

At first, the syrup was sold for five cents per portion at the large “Jacoba” pharmacy in Atlanta.

However, the Coca-Cola drink was created as a result of negligence. While mixing the syrup, the seller accidentally mixed up the taps and poured gas instead of ordinary water. The resulting mixture became Coca-Cola. The name of this drink was coined by the accountant of Pomberton.

My job

When I was 16 I found job at a hotel.I worked as a receptionist.I helped people because they came from another country and they were getting hard to talk with our language.I helped them to check in and check out, sometimes they wanted to go to sights and I helped them because I’m also a guide.I learned from that job communicate with people easier than before. Also I learned new languages and new cultures. That’s right I skipped a lot of lessons from my high school but I could fill in all that.I’m so glad that I was working in that hotel and it doesn’t matter that it was a temporary work.

Expectations from the university

Going to university is a big jump in the life of anyone who decides to enroll and not everyone who attends has the same expectations. I want to have a lot of fun socially, but I also want to succeed academically.

I hope to meet new people. I’m looking forward to learning about other people and their backgrounds where they come from, what there part of the country or world is like. I think it’s interesting to get to know people who grew up from a totally different culture than myself. So I think I’ll adapt to university life soon.

Test – 11

  1. Choose the right option:

Only humans speak using words. But all species in the animal kingdom can communicate in one way or another. Maybe you have heard about the way bees dance around to send messages to each other and the way dogs bark in different ways to give warnings, to be friendly or to be playful.

But did you know about infrasonic communication used by elephants? This is how it works.

Humans hear low sounds like the bass notes in music or thunder rumbling in the sky. But we don’t hear sounds lower than these. However, animals such as elephants and hippos can hear much lower sounds than humans can. And what’s more, they can make sounds in that range as well, and they use them to communicate with each other. This is known as infrasound.

Another amazing thing about infrasound is that it travels over several kilometers. Sounds which have a higher pitch, like the ones people can hear, don’t travel well through walls, leaves, trees and so on, which is why we can’t hear sounds from more than 100 meters away. But infrasound is much ‘stronger,’ and things like grass and trees have no effect on it. Therefore it can travel much further. Elephants can hear infrasonic calls from four kilometers away.

There have been reports of people watching herds of elephants feeding or resting and then the elephants suddenly all charged off for no reason at all. They obviously heard a warning call from a long way away, but the people didn’t hear a sound. In places like a zoo or wildlife park where you can get nearer to animals, it is a bit easier to sense when infrasonic sounds are made. When you stand near mother elephants with their babies in a zoo you may notice a slight rumbling in the air every few minutes – not loud or strong, but clearly noticeable. This is infrasonic communication – the mother elephants ‘talking’ to their babies.

  1. The writer mentions bees and dogs…

a) because they want to learn how they communicate.

b) as examples of animal communication.

c) because they use infrasonic communication.

3. Things like trees …

b) ) cause problems for high sounds.

c) don’t affect sounds at all.

4. in places like zoos …

a) human can sense when infrasonic sounds are being made.

b) elephants don’t need to make infrasonic sounds.

c) it is easier than in wildlife parks to sense when elephants use infrasonic sounds.

What i’m looking forward to this year

This year I’m in my final year. Since the beginning of the academic year, I’ve been working a very busy schedule, but I’m doing it with great pleasure and I get a lot of satisfaction. I’m looking forward to passing my exams and getting into university. I hope to get used to being a student very soon. It’s true that I don’t imagine myself as a student, but I’m looking forward to it. I’m happy that I’ll make new friends and a lot of knowledge. I like to draw, play sports, but my favorite pastime is singing, and I’ve been singing since childhood. I also take responsibility in the field of my singing. I will make great efforts to be successful in Orpez music.

English

I’m looking forward to passing my exams and going to university. This year I’m in my final year. I have loved English since I was a child, but it was a little difficult for me to learn it, but this year, realizing that I want to continue my studies in English, believing in my abilities, I started spending my free time on English and it seems to work very well for me. I have goals for music, but I leave that for the future.
